Understanding the Tool

What is Convert PDF to Word?

PDF to Word conversion rebuilds an editable .docx document from a PDF, which stores the position of every character but none of the document structure behind it. PDF Zone's PDF to Word tool reads the text, position, size and font of every run on each page with Mozilla's pdf.js, reconstructs lines, paragraphs, headings and alignment from that geometry, and writes a standard Word document with the open-source docx library. You get flowing paragraphs you can edit, not a page full of floating text boxes. Everything happens in your browser, so the PDF is never uploaded. The tool works best on text-based PDFs exported from a word processor; scanned PDFs need OCR first, and images, multi-column layouts and complex tables are not rebuilt.

How to Convert PDF to Word

Follow this step-by-step guide to easily process your PDF files locally on your device.

1

Choose your PDF

Drop a PDF onto the tool, or click to pick one. Text-based PDFs work best; scans need OCR first.

2

Convert to Word

Press Convert to Word. Each page is read in turn and the progress is shown as it goes.

3

Open and tidy up

The .docx downloads automatically. Open it in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice, and check tables and any multi-column pages.

Why Use This Tool?

Flowing, Editable Paragraphs

Lines are joined into real paragraphs instead of text boxes, so text re-wraps naturally when you edit it.

Headings and Formatting

Large text becomes Word headings, and bold, italics, font sizes and alignment carry across.

Links Preserved

Web and email links in the PDF remain clickable in the Word document.

No Upload

The PDF is converted on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, which suits contracts and other confidential files.

Rebuilding a document from a page that never stored one

A PDF knows where every letter is drawn and nothing about paragraphs, headings or reading order. Converting to Word means inferring that structure, and the quality of the result depends on how much the PDF gives away.

How the structure is inferred

Every Word document you get from a PDF converter is a reconstruction. This one reads the position, size and font of each run of text, then rebuilds lines and paragraphs from the geometry.

  • Text at the same height is joined into a line, and lines that sit close together with matching size and margin are joined into a paragraph, so you get flowing paragraphs instead of a hard break at the end of every line.
  • A line that stops well short of the right margin is treated as the end of a paragraph, which is how most documents are set.
  • Text noticeably larger than the body size becomes a Word heading at the matching level, so the navigation pane and table of contents work straight away.
  • Bold and italic are read from the font names embedded in the PDF, and each run keeps its point size.
  • Centred and right-aligned lines, such as titles and dates, keep their alignment.
  • Lines that begin with a bullet or a number start a new paragraph rather than being merged into the one above.
  • Links in the original remain clickable in the Word document, as long as they point to a web address or an email.

Where it struggles, and what to do instead

  • A scanned PDF has no text at all, only a picture of it, so there is nothing to convert. Run it through OCR first, then convert the result.
  • Multi-column layouts are read across the page rather than down each column, which interleaves the columns. For a two-column paper, expect to reorder text.
  • Tables are not rebuilt as Word tables. Cells on one row come through on one line separated by tabs, which keeps the values in order and is quick to turn back into a table with Word's Convert Text to Table.
  • Images are not carried over. Extract them separately and insert them where they belong.
  • Headers, footers and page numbers are ordinary text in a PDF, so they appear in the document. Delete them, or use Word's own header feature.
  • Text rotated at an angle, such as a DRAFT stamp or a margin note, is left out, because it would otherwise land in the middle of a sentence.
  • A password-protected PDF has to be unlocked before it can be read.

Getting the best result

  • The cleanest conversions come from PDFs that were exported from Word or another text editor in the first place. The structure was simple, so it is easy to recover.
  • If you still have the original .docx the PDF was made from, use that. No conversion will beat the source.
  • Turn on paragraph marks in Word after converting. Any stray breaks show up immediately and take seconds to remove.
  • Fonts are mapped to their closest standard equivalent. If a PDF used a font you do not have, Word substitutes one and line lengths shift slightly.
  • Check every figure in financial or legal documents against the PDF. Reconstruction cannot misread a number, but it can join two cells in an order you did not expect.
  • For confidential files, this matters most: the conversion happens in your browser, so a contract or medical record never passes through someone else's server on its way to becoming editable.

Frequently asked questions

Drop the PDF onto this page and press Convert to Word. A .docx file downloads with the same name as your PDF. It is free, with no account and no upload, because the conversion runs in your browser.

No. The PDF is read and converted on your own device, and nothing leaves it. You can check by watching the Network tab in your browser's developer tools while you convert.

It keeps paragraphs, headings, bold, italics, font sizes, alignment and links. It does not rebuild images, multi-column layouts or tables as Word tables. Table cells arrive as tab-separated text on one line, which Word can turn back into a table with Insert, Table, Convert Text to Table.

Not directly. A scan is a picture of text with nothing to extract, and the tool will tell you so. Run it through OCR first to add a text layer, then convert the OCR'd PDF here.

The converter reads each line across the full width of the page, so on a two-column layout it joins the left and right columns line by line. Single-column documents are not affected. For a multi-column paper, expect to reorder some text after converting.

Remove the password first with the Decrypt PDF tool, using the password you already have, and then convert the unlocked copy.
