What is Convert Word to PDF?
Word to PDF conversion turns an editable .docx document into a fixed-layout PDF that looks the same on every device and cannot be casually edited. PDF Zone's Word to PDF tool reads the structure of the document with the open-source mammoth library, then lays the text out page by page with pdf-lib in Helvetica, one of the fonts built into every PDF reader, so the result contains real text rather than images. Headings, bold and italic text, nested lists, tables, embedded images and web links are carried across. Western European languages are fully supported; characters from other scripts are replaced with a question mark. Because the work happens in your browser, the document is never uploaded, which matters for contracts, HR files and anything else you would rather not hand to an online converter. Fonts are normalised to a single sans-serif and pages are re-flowed, so documents with intricate layouts look best exported from Word itself.
How to Convert Word to PDF
Follow this step-by-step guide to easily process your PDF files locally on your device.
Choose your .docx file
Drop a Word document onto the tool, or click to pick one. Older .doc files need saving as .docx first.
Pick a page size
Choose A4 or US Letter to match where the PDF will be printed or submitted.
Convert and download
Press Convert to PDF. The file downloads straight away, named after your document, and any content that could not be included is listed on screen.
Why Use This Tool?
Selectable Text
The PDF contains real text, so it can be searched, copied and read by screen readers, unlike a converter that prints each page to an image.
Structure Preserved
Headings, bold, italics, underline, nested bullet and numbered lists, and tables with merged cells all carry across.
Images and Links
Embedded pictures are placed in the text and scaled to fit, and web and email links stay clickable.
No Upload
The document is read and converted in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, so confidential files stay on your device.
What survives the trip from Word to PDF, and what does not
A Word file describes content and leaves the layout to whatever opens it. A PDF fixes every line in place. Converting means making those layout decisions once, and knowing which ones this converter makes for you.
What carries across
The converter reads the document's structure rather than taking a picture of it, then sets the text itself, so the PDF holds real characters you can select, search and copy.
- Headings keep their hierarchy and are set larger and bold, so the outline of the document is still visible at a glance.
- Bold, italic, underline and strikethrough are kept on the exact words they were applied to.
- Bulleted and numbered lists keep their nesting, with each level indented further than the last.
- Tables are rebuilt with ruled cells, and merged cells that span several columns stay merged.
- Images embedded in the document are placed in the flow of the text, scaled down to fit the page when they are too wide.
- Web and email links remain clickable in the PDF. Links to anything else, such as local files or scripts, are dropped on purpose.
- Text is set in Helvetica, one of the fonts built into every PDF reader, so the file stays small and nothing is downloaded. It covers English and Western European languages, including accents, curly quotes, dashes and the euro sign. Letters outside it, such as Greek, Cyrillic or Polish, are replaced with a question mark, and the tool tells you how many.
What changes, and why
- Fonts are normalised to one clean sans-serif. A browser cannot read the fonts installed on the machine that wrote the document, so matching Calibri or Garamond exactly is not possible here.
- Pagination is recalculated. Page breaks fall where the text fills the page at the chosen size, not where Word put them, so a document that relied on a manual break to start a section may break differently.
- Headers, footers, footnote placement, text boxes, columns and page borders are not reproduced. They are layout instructions rather than content, and the converter only carries content.
- Tracked changes and comments are not printed. The PDF shows the document's current text, which is usually what you want to send.
- EMF and WMF drawings, which are Windows-only vector formats often used for charts pasted from Excel, cannot be drawn by a browser. The tool tells you when it has had to leave one out.
- Only the modern .docx format is read. An old .doc file from Word 97-2003 needs to be saved as .docx first.
Choosing between this and Word's own export
- If you have Word and the document's layout is designed to the millimetre, Word's own Save As PDF is the most faithful option, because it uses the same layout engine that drew the pages you see.
- This tool is the better fit when you do not have Word to hand, are on a borrowed or locked-down machine, or cannot upload the file to an online converter because of what is in it.
- For text-led documents such as letters, reports, contracts and CVs, the difference is mostly the font, and the content arrives intact.
- Pick A4 or US Letter to match where the PDF is going. Getting this wrong is the most common reason a printed PDF has odd margins.
- After converting, open the PDF and scroll through it once. Check any table that was wide in Word and any page that needed a deliberate break.
- If the PDF is too large for an email or a portal, run it through compression afterwards. Image-heavy documents shrink the most.
Frequently asked questions
Drop the .docx file onto this page and press Convert to PDF. The conversion runs in your browser, so you do not need Word, an account or an upload. The PDF downloads with the same name as your document.
No. The file is read and converted on your own device, and nothing is sent to a server. You can confirm this in your browser's developer tools: the Network tab shows no upload when you convert.
The content will match, but the styling is simplified. Text is set in a single sans-serif font, and page breaks are recalculated for the page size you choose. Headers, footers, text boxes and multi-column layouts are not reproduced. If a document's design must match precisely, Word's own Save As PDF uses the same layout engine that drew it and will be more faithful.
Yes. The tool sets real text in a standard PDF font rather than turning pages into pictures, so the PDF is searchable, copyable and readable by assistive technology.
Only the modern .docx format is supported. Open an older .doc file in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs, save it as .docx, and convert that.
Charts and drawings pasted from other Office programs are often stored as EMF or WMF, Windows vector formats that browsers cannot draw. The tool lists any images it had to leave out. Saving the image as a PNG and re-inserting it in Word fixes it.
